Gear Improvement - Getting Gear

As you level, you will go into more difficult instances and up against more difficult monsters and bosses. One way to make this easier is to improve your gear.

Getting Gear

New gear can be gotten from the following places:

  • general mob drops
  • shard exchange Lionheart Badge exchange
  • Shylia MarketYou get an epic/upgradeable weapon from completing Lionheart Camp training
  • world boss drops
  • certain instance runs
  • auction house
  • some npc shops
  • player shops
  • Nightmare Carnival trade
  • Race rep trade
  • Someone in Citadel takes token trades for gear
  • pvp arena trade
  • completing main story quests
  • making it yourself with the correct jobs
  • asking your guildies :)
Until you are at least level 50, do not worry too much about your gear. You will level through so fast, it just really does not matter. Even the 50s will go by so fast, it probably won't matter much if you're still wearing lv25 boots.

A good easy place to get some decent gear is through the Lionheart badge exchange. You can get the badges from the basic gear instance group. This is set gear and is upgradeable all the way up to max level - so a great set of gear to have! Make sure to fortify your badge gear to max fortification before upgrading or transferring, since the lower level mats for fortification are easier to get, the gear is easier to fortify, AND the soul gold cost to fortify is much less for this lower level gear.

The badge gear will get you by to about level 70 - at that time, try to get upgraded to hero 1 or 2. Upgrading to those costs wargod pts which you can get from queue-rolls at the end of medium gear instances and advanced gear instances. You can also get wargod pts from completing the weekly dragon tower events, and from wargod badges that you get from world bosses and Lost City nightly event. And of course, you can get wargod pts from completing the Sunday wargod event in FF.

Gear instances drop some fabulous gear - if you can get it. Many times the higher levels get all the good stuff anyway. Gear instances include:
  • Fort Rotulor - lv15-20 gear
  • Emperor's Canyon - lv20s gear
  • Lost Lighthouse - lv30s gear
  • Arena of Souls - lv40s gear
  • Welkin Castle - lv50s gear
  • Outer Ancestral Catacombs - lv60s gear
  • Ancestral Catacombs - lv65 gear
  • Forgotten Prison - lv70 gear
  • Aeon Spire - lv75 gear
  • Tomb of Kings -lv 75 gear
  • dragon tower drops hero 2
  • Molten Inferno drops hero 3
  • ToD drops hero 4
  • FHoF drops hero 4

PvP Arena has some of the best gear, but there is a catch 22 - you have to be good to get the things that you can exchange for the gear, and you want the gear so that you can be good.

Many times your higher level guildies have extra low level gear lying around. Check in with them to see if they have anything that they could give to you - for the good of the guild :)

Ghostfang Castle

Quest Level: 60+
Location: Ghostfang Castle, Nightfall
Late entry: no

Ghostfang Castle (GFC) is an instance that rewards you with level 2 runes, the party leader gets more! Great for when you are leveling your dyos/nyos.

It is a party instance. You have to have at least three to enter, but you will want a full party as this is also a timed instance - you have 20 minutes to get into the castle and defeat Baron Kidd.

The leader must have a special quest obtained by Bill, an npc in Nightfall Citadel. In order to get the quest from Bill, you must show you are dedicated by getting 60 dedication points. You will know if you or someone else has the quest and is able to lead by a buff they will have that says that they can lead the party. You can only lead a party into GFC once a week, but you can go in multiple times.

All party members must be in the same realm and at the entrance before the leader starts the instance. Anyone who is not will be left behind - there are no late entries. Once you enter, the party leader will not be able to get that leader quest again until weekly reset.

As soon as you are inside, you will want the party to split into groups. One group will start attacking the door. One group will attack Lieutenant Rico on a staircase on the right. And one group will want to light the fire using the flint by the door, attack the mobs, and protect the group attacking the door.

Certain tasks that you do will boost your troops' morale which in turn boosts your attack.
  • Lighting fires boosts morale - there is a flint at the front and back entrance.
  • Killing a lieutenant will boost morale - there are four located on various platforms around the castle.
  • Killing a certain number of their troops will boost morale.

The cap on morale is 5. You can monitor how much morale you have by looking at the morale buff - a box with a number in it. You want to keep the morale up since it will help you get through faster.

Once the door is down, you will face a fairly intimidating row of very large attackers. You don't have to kill them all, just enough to get past them - so keep your attacks to the right side and DO NOT AOE. Multi-target attacks put them in a frenzy and people die. So if you don't know which attacks of yours are multi-target, it is time to get to know your skills.

While attacking this group of brutes you have only an overhead point of view. It is hard to move forward if there are too many people in the entrance, so if you are having trouble moving up to attack, it would be advisable to back out everyone but one person OR kill a few of the guys off to the side to open up more room. And since this is a single-file fight for the most part, have your heavy-hitters in the front. Anyone with range attacks should stay to the back.

The flint will reappear at some point during this entrance battle. Have someone relight the fire.

If your morale starts to take a hit, you can also send someone out to kill another lieutenant - as long as they can solo them. But this most likely will take too long and therefore will not be that effective.

As soon as the first party member can break past the mob in the entrance, the rest of that mob will disappear and your whole party can get through.

Now kill Baron Kidd. If your morale starts to drop as you are fighting, send a member out to start another fire. You need to kill Kidd before the timer runs out, or you get no reward.

If you do kill Kidd in the time allotted, Baron Gill will appear to hand out the goods. You need to talk to him to get your items, runes, so don't forget to take them before leaving.

The exit is to the right of Baron Kidd.

You can go into GFC multiple times in one week, but a different person will need to lead each entry.

Another guide to this instance is here.

Dedication

Dedication is one of the many types of points that you can earn in the game. These points reset at weekly reset, so if you need them for anything, you will have to make sure that you earn them and make use of them before server time 00:00 at the end of Sunday night.

Uses:

  • Opens up rewards each week in Shylia's Market. Go to the Dedication tab. Each of the awards will open for you to take as you earn the necessary dedication points. There are some pretty valuable things available, so make sure you rack up those points and take your rewards before reset! Taking the rewards does not lower your dedication count, so feel free to take the rewards as you open them.

  • Requirement to become leader of Ghostfang Castle. You need to have 60 dedication points to get the quest from Bill in Nightfall Citadel that will allow you to lead a party in the Ghostfang Castle instance. This instance gives you lv2 runes - but the leader gets two! And being a leader for this instance is a requirement for leveling your vice/virtue.

  • Completes an achievement. You will notice right away in the game that Henry gives you quests that ask you to reach a certain level of dedication. The max for this quest is 200. Which may sound impossible; but, although not easy, can be done.

Ways to get it:

Henry will offer you 1pt per quest for the first 10-30 quests a day (30 if you haven't done them in a while), with a total of at least 70 dedication every week via his quests. I actually have gotten more than this from his quests a couple times. [70-90/wk]

Arena Competition will give you 2pts per run for the first XX runs. Some people get 2 some get 3, not sure why the difference. I personally got 3pts for each of two back-to-back runs one day. [XX/wk]

Nightfall Dailies 1pt each, up to 7pts per week via the Nightfall dailies. [7/wk]

Quell the Elements will give you 1pt for each one you personally complete. I was in my 70s and did the SoO one and still got dedication for it. [??/wk]

Dragon/Phoenix Orders will give you 2pts for each one you complete. You can do up to 7 each week. [14/wk]

Guild Base Quests give you 2pts for the finishing the first set of four quests each day. [14/wk if in a guild with a base]

Gear Instances for your level will give you 1pt for each first run daily. [??/wk]

God's Trial gives you 2pts per personally completed instance daily. [14/wk]

God's Trial 2 gives you 2pts per personally completed instance daily. [14/wk]

Nightmare Carnival gives you 1pt each. [3/wk]

Advanced Nightmare Carnival gives you 1pt each and you can run it 3x per week. [3/wk]

Glistening Lowlands will give you 2pts for each run. [14/wk]

Luck Quests give you 2pts for each you complete. You can do up to 5 per day. [70/wk]

Creekbank Valley / Immortal Pool (level appropriate) will give you 1pt per completed run and you can run it 3x per day. [21/wk]

Wade's Fishing Hole gives 1pt per completed run. [??/wk]

Advanced Training will give you 1pt for the first hour completed. [7/wk]

Weekly Arena Quests from Powell: Enter Arena 10x, Win 3 Matches, Make 3 Kills, Collect 3 Ears -- each will give you 8pts upon completion. [32/wk]

Rift will give you 15pts just for participating to the end. Now even those without a guild base can join in rift. [15/wk]

Exorcism will give you 8pts for completion. [8/wk]

World Events: Fort Khoaway, Eternal Belief, Hunting Festival, Light of Sage, Werewolf Invasion, Water Wheel Emergency, Mercury Summit -- each will give you 2pts. [14/wk]

Astral Shine: gives up to 20pts per week. [20/wk]

So as you can see you have a possibility of over 300pts each week if you complete everything on this list - -not that you'll be able to do that many in a week. 200 pts is hard enough! Luckily you only have to do 200 in a week once for the achievement; and the best reward from Shylia comes from 145pts - STAR CRYSTAL! With this many options for points, you should be able to get that Star Crystal easy :)
At 240 ded, you get 300 soul leaves which is also very nice.

EVENT: Guild War 11/17/2012

EVENT: GUILD WAR
Date: Saturday 11/17/2012
Time: 17:30 - 18:00
Location: City of Oblivion, Sea of Oblivion on Realm 3

Our guild has accepted a guild war challenge from the guild Delirium. During this event any one from our guild will be able to pk anyone from the guild Delirium, and vice versa. For our purposes, the war is being restricted to a specified battlefield so those really not wishing to participate should not have the worry of being pk'd while trying to do other things.

Each kill will be a point for the team. At the end of the event the points will be tallied and a victor declared. Generally it is a like an arena with a guild as one team and another guild as the other.

We are planning to meet 30 minutes before the war starts to prepare and go to the field together. The locations will be posted here once they are known.

Nightmare Oasis / Nightmare Queen

Level: 60+
Location: Cresent Pond / Immaculate Oasis, Sea of Oblivion

Nightmare Oasis. also referred to as Nightmare Queen and NQ, is a guild quest that consists of a party going to Cresent Pond / Immacualate Oasis in the Sea of Oblivion, fishing up the Nightmare Queen, Alanna, and killing her.
  • This is a level 60 quest, but any level can help out.
  • There has to be a person in the party that has the fishing job.
  • They must use special lures, Raisinger Dream, that can be bought from the The Fleet of Myth merchant, Bob, who stands on a dock south of the Water Observatory trackstone. You should have 10 lures, and it may take this many.
  • The person fishing has to have the oasis quest, or they will not be able to fish her. You can only take the quest once a day, so don't use up all your fishers in one party!
  • You can do this for your guild once a day. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE THE QUEST!
  • Fuzzy orbs spawn at either end of the pond. Kill them or they will replenish her health. Lower levels can take care of the orbs so that the higher levels can concentrate on killing the queen.
  • It is not necessary to have a healer if you have a lot of high level players, but it is a good idea.
This quest does not get accepted retroactively so be sure to take the quest before Alanna is killed! Completing the guild quest gives you contribution, merit and 2 zeal.

Additionally, at the end, you may receive either Void Dust or Void Alloy. You can give the voids to Jessica once a week, if you have extra, send it to your guild leader. These items are used for building structures in the guild.  Void Dust: gives you 5 contribution and 5 merit helps the guild build structures. Void Alloy: gives you 10 contribution and 10 merit, helps the guild build structures.

Gear Drop: sometimes

Helpful tip: you can do this quest with less than six people if their levels are high enough, you have a good tank, and you have a good healer (I have successfully completed this with just a party of a 75 ele warrior, a 74 blood vamp, and a 68 mix warrior -- and I have also done this with a party of just a 78 ele warrior, a 66 blood vamp, a 67 glacial priest, and a 48 mixed warrior.). Have one person stay at the west side of Alanna so that they can see to the end of each tip of the crescent. You can also keep track of where they are by using the map. As the fuzzies start to come toward Alanna, that person can either shout out to other players, or they can run get them themselves. Be sure to have someone other than the tank or the main dd take this position if they plan to take out the fuzzies themselves.

 FWI:
  • Having people in your party that can not get the quest does not affect the people who can take the quest; so if there is room, and lowbies want to help and learn, feel free to let them join :)
  • If you are not in the party that initiated the battle via first contact, you will not get credit for the kill. People who are not in the initiator party can help kill Alanna, but they will get no credit for it.
  • As long as the fisher does not finish the quest, they can fish up Alanna again - so you can use one fisher for multiple parties by just having them not finish the quest until the last party. If you have multiple parties ready to go, have them set up on different realms and have the fisher realm hop :)

Welkin Castle

Level: 50+
Location: T (party queue),  Welkin Castle, Lunagrant Woodlands
Late entry: yes

Welkin Castle is an instance that you get once you reach lv50 -- but it is very difficult to run at 50. You are best off to run it with at least two 70+, three if you can get them. This is a full party run unless you have the majority 70+. And it is a very good idea to have at least one party member that can revive.

This is a run on the mentor list, so if you can get a recruit, do it. Also, I have been in parties that have had success at multiple scrolls, so get all the lowbies to get a recruit order.

You can queue or manually enter this instance. AND this is an instance that you can late enter. I was in one run that had a total of 11 different people run it since we kept losing people and bringing new people in. If a player dies a lot during the run, they can leave, fix their gear, and hop back in. Handy.

Once inside, start by sharing buffs and using any sort of special potions and whatnot that you want to use.

You will go up a hill past someone offering a quest to save Sibil. Sibil is a lost cause. Skip it unless you have a bunch of high levels that are willing to putz around.*

If you have at least three very high levels, or a couple high levels and most people in their upper 60s, you might be able to rush straight to each boss without worrying about tactics too much. For you, you need no guide. However, if you are leaning hard on lowbies, I would suggest using the following techniques.

Take it slow and kill small bunches as you work your way up to the first boss. Tank and spank her with the high levels and have the low levels concentrate on the fishkins that will attack.

Once she is finished you will have a gauntlet to run to the next boss. Everyone should fill up hp and mana before heading up. Put your pets away - they will hold mob attention at the top while you are trying to hide and could rat you out. Have the tank lead. You will run through, do not stop to fight. Run up the hill and up the stairs on the right to a large portico. Once you hit the top of the hill, do not resurrect if you are a lowbie and you die; wait for a party member with revive to come get you. You do not want to run that hill by yourself. Constant death.**

Once you are at the top of the stairs, run into the corners. The mobs are dumb and will lose track of you if you hide in the corners - provided that they were not too close to you when you hid. Each corner will work. Have the tank run to the far corner while the rest hide in the first corner. The tank needs to be very careful to stay close to the wall on the right to avoid attracting the next boss who hangs out on the far left of the portico. The mobs should follow the tank leaving everyone else safe. As long as everyone else stays still in the first corner the mobs will lose interest and go back to their places down the hill. If the tank is dying but the mob is leaving everyone else alone, do not go to the tank - even if they die. Wait until the mob has dispersed then go revive the tank.

Once the mob has dispersed, it is safe to come out of the corners. Sometimes only some of the mob disperses and you will have to come out fighting. But a few fishkins and nagas are far better than a swarm. Once those are dispensed with, you can get ready for the Butcher. He will be similar to the first boss in difficulty, but it is very important that low levels NOT aoe; they may pull aggro which will get them killed fast. While the party is fighting him, it is very important that any low levels be very aware of their hp. If it dips below 1/2, they need to get back fast. Dying from this point on will not be an easy comeback.

Once he is dead, kill all the fishkins and nagas in the courtyard through the now open gate. Take them in small bunches to avoid needless party deaths.

Go up the stairs killing fishkins and nagas as you go. Stay to the left when you reach the top of the stairs. Kill the rest of the fishkins in this area. Have a long range attacker pull the fishkins near the Storm Witch one-by-one. Once all those are killed and everyone is prepared again, have everyone but the tank get far back. The tank will go get the witch's attention and then the party can find their places to fight. She stuns and runs around. She is not easy to fight, and just when you think you have her, she calls a large mob of fishkins to come help her. Once this happens, it may be best for the tanks to try to grab all attention and kill the fishkins first. Once her friends are all dead, she is nearly easy pickings.

Now it is on to Nudo and his lackeys. The party should climb onto the ledge that runs around the building that was directly behind the Storm Witch. Drop down as far left as you can. Nudo will be on the right. Nudo will have two helpers. If they are not present, one tactic to make them show is to send a pet in to aggro the boss. Another way is to have the tank rush Nudo. His helpers will appear at this point. The tank will then turn right and run along the terrace, back up the stairs that led to the Storm Witch, and back along the ledge to where the party is. By this time Nudo and his lackeys should have lost interest and gone back to hang out where you first saw him. If they haven't, the tank can just kite them until the first lackey is dead; then someone can pull the second lackey off the tank while they continue running the boss around.

Now you can have a long range attacker pull them one at a time - lackeys first. In fact, usually one of them comes back before Nudo and the other one, so have someone pull this one before the other two get back - your tank should be there in time to help out. Once his lackeys are gone, he is far more manageable.

If anyone dies at this point, they will not be able to get back if they resurrect as the gate closes again to this boss area. They must be alive to get the boss kill to count. SO, if you have people that need to resurrect, you can still get the count, and let them help, by pulling the boss over to the gate.

Once he is dead, pat yourselves on the back. Good job. Now if you are lucky, you will get a bonus boss. This boss has a slow kill debuff that you can dispell by stepping out of her cyclone. But I find it handy for getting back to the beginning when you are done :P Because once you are done, the exit is still right where you came in, and that is a long way down.

*Here's what someone in the forums had to say about the Sibil quest. Not sure if it is accurate: "Sibil runs up the center stairs and actually starts attacking the Butcher. I think this is a time event as she normally dies... I tried speaking to her to get her to follow me instead. That didn't work she was hell bent on protecting a crystal. The only thing I can say is kill the Butcher ASAP and hope she doesn't die. I'm not certain if she'd be willing to cooperate after the Butchers dead.... or runs off to be almighty yet again and try taking on something else."

UPDATE: I did finish the Sibil quest, and it is not really an easy one to complete. Sibil does run up to help fight The Butcher. Find her and kill any mobs attacking her. Once the Butcher is dead, Sibil will take off to find her sister; and when I say take off, I am not kidding. She runs right up walls and disappears to find something to kill. She generally reappears somewhere on the road that takes you up the hill from the first boss. You need to find her as soon as possible and escort her back  - basically you just follow her and make sure she doesn't die. She has attention issues so is hard to keep on task. Once she reappears on the road, she does seem to run back up the hill to the landing, so leaving part of your party there until she starts her way back down the hill is a good idea. I am not sure if it is best to kill all the mobs on the hill as you come up to keep Sibil from getting killed by them, or to leave at least a few to keep her traveling on the road down the hill -- I'm leaning toward the latter since this was the situation during my first successful run on this quest; she really wants to fight things and will disappear if there aren't enough things to keep her interested.  Help her kill anything that she wanders off to fight. You will need to do this all the way back to her sister. Once they reunite, there is a long back and forth and you fill the quest.

**Alternatively, you can just kill the mobs on the hill as you go. This is the best tactic if you are sure people will die at some point and you will not be able to revive them. If you do it this way, you don't need to use the corners as there won't be a huge mob on your tail.

Study and Knowledge Quiz

Rio gives you two quests that are somewhat related to each other: the Study quest and the Knowledge quest. Both require that you talk to Niachilo.

The Study Quest
The Study quest has you go to Niachilo  to get study materials. Open your bag and right click the blue book. This will leave you with study notes that you give to Niachilo. In return, he will give you a story to add to your Anthology collection.

There are a few reasons that you will want to put this quest into your dailies: you get socialite points for it, collecting all the stories from a single collection completes an achievement, sometimes you will also get a special gift - such as a lionheart scroll, and the stories that you collect will answer the questions that he asks in the Knowledge quest.

These books are transferable, so, if you already have it, see if a guildie needs it or you can sell it.

The Knowledge Quiz
One of the guild quests that many of you can complete from lv30-lv60 is the Knowledge Quiz; provided that you also have lv3 Socialite. This is a quick and easy one that I highly recommend that you do daily. You can easily reach lv3 Socialite by taking Rio quests whenever you can, [and doing the daily social quests in Lunagrant Woodland once you are able - the daily from Karthy could give you 200pts! <- now defunct as we no longer have access to this area]

The quiz questions that Niachilo asks come from the the stories that he gives you for completing the Study quest. You can hit L, choose Anthology, and click through the picture tiles at the top to find the corresponding story and the answer to your question. It is also located in the top right of the C menu. But unless you have the book that he is asking about, how do you know the answer to the knowledge question?

Well, you could guess, and wait the 5 mins to get a new knowledge quest from Rio if you guess wrong.

The other thing you could do is refer to this handy cheat sheet :)
I also put a link in the sidebar to make sure that it stays even handier.
